Steven Epstein Biography – as of 2004
Shortly after receiving a B.S. Degree in Music Education from Hofstra University in 1973, Epstein was offered a job as music editor for the, then, Columbia Masterworks label under the helm of Tom Frost and Tom Shepard. While at Hofstra, Steve held the position of Classical Music Director for their FM radio station, and also served as lab technician for the University’s electronic music studio.
For a period of more than 30 years, Steve has worked with an incredible array of artists and ensembles in the fields of classical, jazz, and Broadway.
These artists include: Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, (both classical and jazz), Midori, Lorin Maazel, Claudio Abbado, David Zinman, Erich Leinsdorf Esa-Pekka Salonen, Kurt Masur, Pinchas Zukerman, ltzhak Perlman, Michael Tilson Thomas, Raymond Leppard, Cho-liang Lin, Murray Perahia, the Juilliard String Quartet, the Tokyo Quartet, Emanuel Ax, Elly Ameling, Placido Domingo, Sylvia McNair, Andre Previn, Sarah Vaughan, Bobby McFerrin, John McLaughlin, Mandy Patinkin, Vanessa Williams, James Taylor, Mark O’Connor, the Vienna, Berlin, New York, and London Philharmonic Orchestras, and also the Pittsburgh, Chicago, Cleveland, Concertgebouw, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and London Symphony Orchestras.

Seventeen albums produced by Steve have won Grammy Awards including this year’s Best Classical Crossover Album, “Obrigado Brazil,” featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
Steve himself has been honored with a total of 27 Grammy nominations and presently has a total of eleven Grammy Awards, six for Classical Producer of the Year, two for Best Classical Crossover Album, one for Best Classical Album, Children’s Spoken Word Album, and Soundtrack Album, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
Other honors, for albums, which he has produced, include the Edison and Grande Prix du Disc Awards, as well as four Gold records.
Steve is an Adjunct Professor at McGill University in Montreal, where he teaches a graduate course on special techniques in classical record production.
